Alice A. Koester

Alice A. Koester, 96, of Sumner, died Thursday, February 19, 2015, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 25, 2015, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. William Runaas, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Sumner. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday February 24, 2015 at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner and for one hour preceding the service on Wednesday. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner is assisting the family.

Alice A., daughter of Henry and Caroline (Grannemann) Koch was born October 18, 1918, in Bethel Township of Fayette County, Iowa. She was baptized December 1,1918, at home by Pastor L.A. Westenberger and confirmed June 26, 1932 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye by Dr. F. Braun. She attended Bethel Township School #9 and graduated from Hawkeye High School in 1936. On June 1, 1939, she was united in marriage with Reuben Koester, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye by Pastor E.W. Kraemer. As a young girl she was very active in 4-H-local offices and county chairman. She was chairman of the County Extension Council. She worked with the Cancer Society in Fayette and Bremer counties. She was a long time member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. Alice taught Bible School, and she and Reuben both taught Sunday School while their children were in Sunday School. Alice was active with the women of the church where she served on the altar guild for twenty-five years - chairman for fifteen years. She was also a member of the school reorganization committee, volunteered at Hillcrest Home for thirty plus years and served on the resident advocate committee for twenty-five years.

She is survived by two sons, Stanley and Myron Koester, both of Sumner; four grandchildren, Dean, Tara, Angela, and Anthony; eight great-grandchildren, Tayler, Keeley, Kyler, Emma, Teeghen, Kallen, Aiden, and Claire.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; daughter Sondra Opps; granddaughter Nichole; daughter-in-law, Lois Koester; four brothers, Walter and Fred Koch, and two who died in infancy; and two sisters, Vernita Fischer and Emma Koch.

I know that I am extremely late in posting this. I have so many great memories of going out to the farm when my parents had other places to be. I enjoyed helping with the milking and playing with the cats. After we bought our farm, I missed going to the Koesters'.

I am so thankful she could join us for Christmas in 2011. It was great to spend time with her and Daddy so enjoyed that last one.

My prayers will continue to be with the family. God bless you all. You have some very special angels watching out for you and your children and grandchildren.

Alice and her family hold many memories for us. As children, we used to go visit the farm and spent several New Year Days with them. She is a role model to many and will be missed.

Alice was a very special person, always a joy to visit with and she enjoyed giving her time helping others. We miss seeing her at Saturday night church. She truly lived a good life, and will find her place in heaven.
